ASUP Ends Strike, Instructs Members To Resume Work On Monday
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has announced that its members are to return to work following the conclusion of a two-week strike. The strike was initiated as a warning and a precursor to a possible indefinite industrial action…RRAD MORE…
In a statement signed by the union’s President, Kpanja Shamnah, ASUP directed its members to resume their duties on Monday, December 16.
This decision follows the establishment of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during a conciliation meeting with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment on December 9.
The statement noted: “Members of the Union, as well as the general public, may remember that we declared a two-week definite strike starting from December 2, 2024, due to the government’s failure to implement nine items in the work plan developed jointly with our Union to address ongoing trade disputes.
“It is important to recall that this strike was intended as a warning ahead of a possible indefinite strike.
“During the strike period, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment convened a meeting on December 9, 2024, between our Union and the government to find a resolution and avert an indefinite strike.
“At this meeting, a new memorandum of understanding was signed, with an agreement for another meeting to take place on January 23, 2025, to evaluate compliance from both parties and address other outstanding issues.
“Following this meeting, the Union’s National Executive Council will convene to review the situation.
“Given these developments, all Union members are directed to resume duties starting on Monday, December 16, 2024.
“We extend our gratitude and appreciation to our members for their commitment and perseverance, and we hope the government will earnestly work towards a satisfactory resolution of the outstanding issues.
