Governor Makinde Provides Fresh Update On Oyo Curfew, Surveillance Aircraft Delivery

The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the lives and welfare of residents as efforts intensify to rescue the pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area.

In a statement issued on Friday, Governor Seyi Makinde disclosed that security agencies, with the full backing of the state government, are conducting coordinated operations aimed at securing the safe release of the victims. He stressed that every necessary support is being provided to ensure the rescue mission succeeds.

As part of measures to strengthen the ongoing operation, the governor announced the approval of a temporary 16-hour curfew across 10 local government areas bordering the Old Oyo National Park. According to the statement, the restriction is designed to enhance security operations and provide a conducive environment for rescue efforts, while residents in the affected communities have been urged to cooperate with security personnel throughout the exercise.

Makinde also assured residents that the security situation would not disrupt the state’s commitment to education. He revealed that preparations are underway to ensure schools resume safely, with adequate measures being put in place to protect pupils, teachers and host communities. The governor emphasized that while education remains a critical priority, the safety of learners and school personnel will continue to guide every decision taken by the government.

The governor further provided an update on the state’s surveillance aircraft project, revealing that the aircraft is in the final stages before delivery. He explained that although additional technical procedures have delayed its expected June arrival, the remaining processes are necessary to satisfy all operational, regulatory and safety requirements before it is deployed.

According to the statement, the aircraft will be fully prepared for immediate operational use upon delivery and is expected to significantly improve the state’s aerial surveillance capabilities, emergency response operations and broader security initiatives, while also supporting other key government activities.

Makinde maintained that despite the prevailing security challenges, his administration remains focused on strengthening public safety, education, infrastructure and strategic investments across the state. He also expressed appreciation to residents for their patience, resilience and continued support, assuring them that the government will continue to provide updates on both the rescue operation and the surveillance aircraft delivery as developments unfold.
