Flying Eagles Humiliated 4-1 By Burkina Faso, Miss 2027 U-20 AFCON And World Cup

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria have been eliminated from the race for the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations after suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship final.

The decisive encounter, played at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire, on Sunday, August 9, saw Burkina Faso’s Young Stallions make a blistering start by scoring three goals within the opening 15 minutes.

Nigeria struggled to recover from the early setback despite efforts to regain control of the contest. The Flying Eagles eventually reduced the deficit through a second-half penalty, briefly raising hopes of a comeback.

However, Burkina Faso responded strongly and added a fourth goal late in the match to secure a convincing victory and claim the regional championship.

The defeat ended Nigeria’s hopes of defending the WAFU Zone B title they won in Lomé in October 2024 and also denied the team qualification for the 2027 U-20 AFCON.

According to Ireporter Online, Nigeria’s failure to reach the continental tournament also means the Flying Eagles will miss the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup scheduled to be held in Azerbaijan.

Burkina Faso completed a double over Nigeria in the tournament after previously defeating the Flying Eagles 2-0 during the group stage.

The latest victory secured the Young Stallions the WAFU Zone B title and one of the zone’s two qualification spots for next year’s U-20 AFCON. Hosts Ghana will occupy the other slot.

Nigeria had entered the final knowing that victory was crucial to retaining their regional crown and securing a place at the continental championship. However, the team was unable to overcome Burkina Faso’s early dominance.

The latest result further highlights Burkina Faso’s recent advantage over Nigeria at the regional level. The Young Stallions had also defeated Nigeria 1-0 at the 2024 WAFU Zone B tournament in Lomé, while their meeting in Niger Republic in 2022 ended in a 2-2 draw.

The Flying Eagles will now have to regroup after missing out on both the 2027 U-20 AFCON and the global youth championship.
