Lionel Messi’s much-anticipated debut in Major League Soccer (MLS) with Inter Miami resulted in familiar outcomes: the team secured a victory, and Messi scored a goal.

Now, the team will strive to secure a playoff spot and keep their hopes alive for winning the MLS Cup. Messi is expected to make his full league debut against Nashville SC on Wednesday.

The MLS consists of 29 clubs, including three Canadian teams. Teams are divided into Eastern and Western Conferences to minimize travel, with each team playing at least twice against conference opponents and a few matches against teams from the other conference for a total of 34 games.

The MLS playoffs are a knockout-style tournament held at the end of the regular season. The Supporters’ Shield is awarded to the team with the most points, but the more prestigious MLS Cup is won at the end of the playoffs. The top seven teams from each conference automatically qualify for the playoffs, with the eighth and ninth teams competing for a “wild card” spot.

Inter Miami, led by Messi, seeks to close the points gap to secure a playoff spot. The MLS does not have a promotion and relegation system. New teams joining the league must meet financial, fan base, and stadium criteria. Unlike other leagues, the MLS does not pause for international breaks, leading to potential absences of key players during such periods.
