Nollywood actress Blessing Nze Obasi has spoken out about the backlash she received from some Christian faithful over her role as a lesbian inmate in the second season of Blood Sisters.

According to Ireporter Online, the actress made this known during an interview on Yanga FM, where she noted that many critics failed to distinguish between her professional acting roles and her personal beliefs.

Obasi explained that acting is a craft that requires performers to embody different characters and life experiences, stressing that such portrayals should not be mistaken for an actor’s personal values or lifestyle choices.

She further stated that her character in the series was inspired by real-life situations, particularly occurrences within prison environments, adding that the storyline was not intended to promote or endorse same-sex relationships.

The actress emphasized that the production sought to reflect societal realities through storytelling, rather than influence moral or social behaviour, noting that sensitivity was applied in the depiction of the scenes.

Speaking on the controversy, she said: “We are telling a real story about things that truly happen. The Christians came for me and attacked. They said ‘as a child of God how would I take such role’ and I said ‘we are telling real stories of what happens in the prison. However the production company was sensitive enough not to depict the horridness of it. They are not in support of it (lesbianism) but they are telling the story. There is so much positivity. I put my mind on that.”
