Grammy Awards Adds 5 New Categories For 2027 In Major Shake-Up

According to Ireporter Online, the Grammy Awards has announced the introduction of five new categories for the 2027 edition, in a move aimed at expanding recognition for diverse global sounds and contemporary musical expressions.

The Recording Academy confirmed the additions as Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, Best Latin Song, Best Asian Pop Music Performance, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, and Best Traditional Folk Album. The Academy stated that the new categories are intended to better reflect evolving musical styles, honour songwriting excellence, and acknowledge collaborative works that have gained significant cultural and global influence.

It further explained that the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category will spotlight modern pop recordings by Asian artists, while the Best Latin Song category will recognise outstanding songwriting achievements within the Latin music industry. The expansion is part of a broader effort to ensure the awards remain inclusive of rapidly growing global music markets.

This development follows earlier reforms that introduced the Best African Music Performance category at the 2024 Grammy Awards, a category that has since gained wide attention. South African singer Tyla made history as the first winner of the category with her hit Water, defeating strong contenders including several top Nigerian artistes.

The Recording Academy noted that the latest changes further reinforce its commitment to reflecting the diversity of the global music landscape, particularly as genres such as Afrobeats, amapiano, Latin pop, and Asian pop continue to gain international prominence. The 69th Grammy Awards in 2027 will be the first ceremony to feature all five newly introduced categories.
