Obi Fires Back: ‘Prove I Took LP Donations, I’ll Quit Campaign
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has dared his critics to substantiate claims that he diverted funds donated to the Labour Party (LP) during the 2023 general elections, insisting he would step down from campaigning if such allegations are proven.
According to Ireporter Online, Obi made the statement on Tuesday during an interview on Nevon Media anchored by journalist Rufai Oseni, where he addressed accusations that he and activist Aisha Yesufu misappropriated donations raised for the LP’s presidential campaign.
Obi dismissed the claims as baseless, challenging those making the allegations to produce verifiable evidence to back their assertions. He questioned the credibility of reports suggesting that billions of naira or millions of dollars were mismanaged, asking for proof of the existence and movement of such funds.
“I don’t go by people talking nonsensically and listen to them. He said that we took from the Labour Party’s account ₦10 billion or $30 million. Where is the account?” he said.
The former Anambra State governor further stated that he was compiling a list of his accusers and would soon compel them to defend their claims publicly, stressing that repeated allegations without evidence would no longer be ignored.
“I’m going to include every accuser very soon in the list of the people I want to come out and prove that I took money from the Labour Party’s account or any financial mismanagement allegation,” he added.
Obi maintained that his public service record remains open to scrutiny, insisting he has nothing to conceal. He reiterated that if anyone could prove he misappropriated even a fraction of the donations made to the Labour Party, he would immediately withdraw from campaigning.
“If anyone can prove that I took one per cent of Labour Party’s donations, I will stop campaigning,” he declared.
