President Bola Tinubu on Sunday received two prominent chieftains of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rufai Hanga and Kabiru Gaya, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, amid reports of their possible move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to Ireporter Online, the two Kano-based politicians arrived at the Villa alongside Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who led them to the meeting with the President.

The visit comes shortly after reports emerged that Hanga and Gaya are considering leaving the NDC following setbacks in their political ambitions within the opposition party.

Sources indicate that Hanga, a former senator, was unable to secure the Kano Central Senatorial ticket and the deputy governorship slot under the NDC platform. He is reportedly unhappy over the outcome of the party’s internal arrangements, particularly after failing to secure a political position linked to the influence of NDC vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Gaya, who contested the Kano South Senatorial seat under the NDC, also reportedly lost the ticket after a consensus candidate from Kwankwaso’s political camp emerged.

The reported move followed an earlier meeting between the APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, and the two politicians, further fueling speculation about their planned defection.

The meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa has been described by political observers as another indication that Hanga and Gaya may soon join the ruling party.

The two Kano political figures are expected to formally announce their decision on their next political move in the coming days as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
