BREAKING: INEC Recognizes Sadiq Gombe As SDP Leader Amid Party Reorganization
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognized the faction of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) led by Professor Sadiq Abubakar Gombe as the authentic leadership of the party, following a court-backed resolution on the party’s internal dispute.
According to Ireporter Online, INEC confirmed the development on its official portal, where Professor Gombe’s name was listed as the National Chairman of the SDP alongside other newly recognized party executives. The commission noted that the decision was implemented in compliance with a court order, which aligns with a Supreme Court judgment affirming the autonomy of political parties in managing their internal affairs.
The recognition effectively replaces Shehu Musa Gabam, whose leadership had previously been reinstated following a Court of Appeal ruling, thereby bringing renewed clarity to the party’s leadership structure.
Reacting to the development, the SDP National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, described the move as a victory for the rule of law, adding that it has brought an end to the prolonged leadership crisis within the party. He stated that the resolution places the SDP on a stronger footing ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections, with its presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo.
The party commended INEC for respecting judicial authority and upholding the constitutional rights of political parties to determine their leadership without interference. It further emphasized that the Supreme Court had clearly ruled that neither the courts nor INEC should interfere in the internal affairs of political parties, including leadership selection and disciplinary matters.
The SDP expressed optimism that INEC would continue to uphold its independence and engage political parties in a more cooperative and democratic manner going forward. The party also reaffirmed its commitment to working with Nigerians and democratic institutions to strengthen governance, reduce poverty and insecurity, and deepen democratic values in the country.
