UK Court Grants Diezani £70k Bail In Bribery Case (DETAILS)

A UK court has granted former Nigerian Petroleum Resources Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, bail amounting to £70,000.

She appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court in London, facing bribery charges totaling £100,000, as part of a National Crime Agency investigation.

District Judge Michael Snow approved bail but imposed additional conditions, considering her a potential flight risk.

Alison-Madueke, aged 63, previously held key positions in the Nigerian government from 2010 to 2015, including serving as president of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). The NCA suspects she received bribes during her tenure as Minister for Petroleum Resources in exchange for awarding significant oil and gas contracts.

Assets associated with the alleged offenses, valued at millions of pounds, have already been frozen as part of the ongoing investigation. In March of this year, the NCA provided evidence to the US Department of Justice, enabling them to recover assets totaling $53.1 million linked to Alison-Madueke’s alleged corruption.

She is accused of benefiting from a range of advantages, including £100,000 in cash, chauffeur-driven cars, private jet flights, luxurious family holidays, and the use of multiple properties in London. Alison-Madueke was arrested in London in 2015, shortly after stepping down as minister, and was charged in August with six bribery offenses.

She has spent the past eight years on police bail, residing in the upscale London area of St John’s Wood. The charges against her, as presented in court, all pertain to events alleged to have occurred in London.
