It is undeniable that Nigerians are enduring considerable hardships today, and anyone suggesting otherwise is not being truthful. The public’s frustration is palpable, and it underscores the severity of the situation.
The root causes of this skyrocketing hardship are directly linked to the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the Naira. It is disheartening that, in both cases, we cannot refine our own fuel despite being a major producer, nor can we produce essential commodities despite being a significant global consumer.
However, in every dire situation, there lies a solution. What are these solutions? They involve sacrifices and a concerted effort to collaborate with the government in realizing its post-subsidy removal plans.
The irony here is that with the right mindset, this is achievable. First and foremost, we must accept the removal of the fuel subsidy and look inward to convert our waste into wealth, both as individuals and as a nation.
Despite the harsh realities, Nigeria still remains among the most affordable countries to live in. However, we lack the necessary infrastructure, a reliable transportation system, a robust educational system, a functioning healthcare system, and adequate security to compensate for the high cost of living when compared to foreign countries.
To counter this, we must push the government to immediately implement its plans using the funds saved from the subsidy removal. This means that as we endure these hardships, we should witness tangible improvements, including job opportunities, better roads, enhanced security, and advancements in various sectors that are crucial to our well-being.
President Tinubu’s announcement of a provisional salary increase of 25,000 Naira for the next six months, followed by an additional 35,000 Naira for all treasury-paid federal government workers, is a commendable initiative to alleviate the economic burden.
It’s crucial to discern the intentions behind such gestures, as they reveal the giver’s motives and the message they aim to convey. Understanding these intentions allows us to appreciate and respond to the gesture appropriately, nurturing meaningful relationships and preventing misunderstandings.
Tinubu has stated unequivocally that we will begin to reap the benefits of the post-fuel subsidy removal era within the next six months. As a result, it is critical that labour unions, which have mobilised extensively in protest, understand and embrace the government’s actions while simultaneously monitoring the progress of the advantages resulting from the withdrawal of fuel subsidies.
Can Nigerians envision a country with robust infrastructure and abundant global job opportunities?
Like 2Pac would say, “Picture me rolling.” Let’s embrace this gift from the President and collaborate to turn our waste into wealth. There are numerous avenues to channel our energies that can yield economic benefits, especially if the government follows through with its plans to provide infrastructure and employment opportunities for Nigerians.
Nigerians are urging labour unions to demonstrate restraint and collaborate with the administration in the hope that this difficult period will soon pass.
