Abaribe Reacts To Supreme Court Ruling On Nnamdi Kanu

Former Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, has urged for calm in response to the Supreme Court’s decision not to release the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. Abaribe assured the Igbo community that they would actively pursue a political solution to potentially secure his freedom.

In a press statement issued by his media adviser, Uchenna Awom, on Friday, Senator Abaribe, representing Abia South in the Senate, addressed the Supreme Court’s setting aside of the appeal court’s judgment that dismissed terrorism charges against Kanu.

The apex court held that the trial court couldn’t proceed with the case due to violations of Kanu’s rights by the prosecution, condemning the invasion of Kanu’s residence as irresponsible.

In response, IPOB deemed Kanu’s continued detention as “unconstitutional” and argued that self-determination is legal, supported by United Nations laws and the African Union Charter. The group praised Anambra and Enugu state governors, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo and Dr. Peter Mba, for advocating the unconditional release of the pro-Biafran leader.

Despite the unfavorable outcome at the Supreme Court, Abaribe encouraged the Igbo community not to lose hope.

His statement read, “I’m of the firm belief that this current Federal Government will do something very fast to release Nnamdi Kanu, if for no other reason, but for national cohesion and unity of the country.
