Ex-Humanitarian Affairs Minister Betta Edu Calls For Unity And Patriotism On Independence Day

Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu, has urged Nigerians to embrace unity, patriotism, and collective responsibility in building a stronger and more prosperous nation as the country marks its 65th Independence Anniversary on October 1, 2025. In her Independence Day message, Edu described the occasion as both a time for gratitude and a renewed commitment to the founding principles of peace, unity, and progress.

She commended the resilience and innovative spirit of Nigerians, emphasizing that the people remain the nation’s greatest asset. “Nigerians are specially crafted with great determination, an unconquerable spirit, and a limitless possibilities mindset,” she said, noting that citizens have continued to distinguish themselves globally across multiple sectors.

Edu also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his bold and decisive policy reforms, highlighting their role in establishing a foundation for sustainable growth. “These initiatives are laying a solid foundation for national renewal. Though challenges persist, the Renewed Hope Agenda provides a clear pathway to stability, reforms, and expanded opportunities for all Nigerians. We are already at the end of the tunnel; all we see now is green ahead,” she stated.

She commended government efforts to reposition the economy, support vulnerable citizens, and advance citizen-centred governance. The former minister further encouraged Nigerians to view the country’s diversity as an asset, noting that the nation’s large population and abundant resources provide fertile ground for investment and development. She stressed that unity and collective effort are key to achieving lasting prosperity. “Together, we can turn today’s sacrifices into tomorrow’s prosperity,” she added.

Nigeria celebrates its independence from Britain every October 1. This year’s celebrations were scaled down following the Federal Government’s cancellation of the traditional parade. Nevertheless, President Tinubu delivered a nationwide broadcast at 7 a.m. to mark the anniversary.
