Whistle-Blower Policy Losing Steam, FG Lament

The whistleblower policy, introduced by the Federal Government on December 21, 2016 through the Ministry of Finance to encourage people to provide information on financial misdemeanor, has lost steam, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) bemoaned Tuesday.

The program specifically pays 2.5% to 5% of the recovered monies to a whistle-blower who informs the ministry’s portal of any financial mismanagement or tip-off about any stolen funds.

Yesterday, following the FEC meeting chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning Zainab Ahmed made the announcement.

She claims that the council passed the draft legislation to bolster the battle against corruption and to offer security for informants who provide information to the government.

She said: “The Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning presented a number of memos today. The first is the draft Whistle-Blower Bill for 2022. This memo has been reviewed by council and approved with a provision to ensure alignment with the Evidence Act.

“The purpose of operationalising and putting in place a whistle-blower bill is to strengthen the fight against corruption and to enable protection for whistle-blowers.”
