2026 World Cup: Wike Expresses Displeasure To Former Super Eagles Captain
Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has voiced his disappointment over Nigeria’s failure to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, lamenting the absence of the Super Eagles from the global football showpiece.
Speaking on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Kuje-Gwagwalada Road in Abuja, the minister addressed former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo, who was among the notable guests at the event, and urged him to relay the feelings of millions of Nigerians to the national team.
Wike stated that many Nigerians remain dissatisfied with the team’s inability to qualify for the tournament, stressing that supporters deserve to have their frustrations acknowledged rather than ignored.
The minister noted that it was particularly painful to watch nations with lesser football pedigree participate in the World Cup while Nigeria, despite boasting a wealth of talented players competing across top leagues worldwide, failed to make the tournament.
He remarked that the country’s football potential should ordinarily place it among the competing nations and expressed concern over seeing unfamiliar countries feature on football’s biggest stage while Nigeria remained absent.
Directing his message to Yobo, Wike reiterated that the disappointment among football-loving Nigerians is widespread and urged the former captain to communicate the public’s sentiments to the Super Eagles.
Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup were dashed after an unsuccessful CAF qualification campaign. The Super Eagles’ aspirations were further ended in the qualifying playoffs, where they suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Congo, bringing their World Cup dream to an abrupt end.
