[BREAKING] 16 Military Officers To Stand Trial Over Alleged Coup Plot — Defence Headquarters
The Armed Forces of Nigeria have concluded investigations into 16 military officers who were arrested over alleged acts of indiscipline and violations of service regulations, with some now set to face trial before military judicial panels.
Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja, noting that the arrests were initially announced by the Defence Headquarters in October 2025. According to him, the investigations were conducted in line with established military procedures and regulations, thoroughly examining the conduct of the officers and identifying those with cases to answer.
Uba explained that some allegations against the officers involved plotting to overthrow the government, describing such acts as fundamentally incompatible with the ethics, values, and professional standards of the Armed Forces.
“These actions are inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards expected of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” he said. Officers found culpable will be formally arraigned before military judicial panels to face trial in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.
The defence spokesman emphasized that these measures are disciplinary in nature, aimed at maintaining cohesion, discipline, and operational effectiveness within the military. He reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority, assuring the public that due process and fairness would be strictly observed throughout the proceedings.
