According to Ireporter Online, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is reportedly set to formally defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The development follows a closed-door meeting between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the governor at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

Sources familiar with the discussions said the meeting resolved key political concerns that had previously delayed Yusuf’s planned defection, paving the way for an official announcement expected within days. The discussions reportedly addressed issues related to Yusuf’s political future within the APC, including assurances about his 2027 re-election bid, the continuity of his political structure, and the security of his supporters within the ruling party.

The meeting, which lasted approximately three hours, took place amid weeks of speculation in Kano, where Yusuf’s potential defection has been widely discussed and reportedly strained his relationship with former governor and NNPP national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Observers noted that President Tinubu personally reassured the governor of his importance to the APC’s political strategy, particularly in Kano and the wider North West region, where the party faced setbacks in the 2023 elections.

Governor Yusuf declined to comment after leaving the Villa, stating only that he “will be back.” Sources indicated that a formal announcement of his defection could come within days, reflecting a mutual desire to align with the APC leadership.
