Nigerian gospel singer Asu Ekiye has opened up about the circumstances surrounding the end of his 28-year marriage to his wife, Kunemofa Asu, saying he did not initiate the decision to dissolve the union.

The Bayelsa-born singer, popularly known as the Prince of the Niger Delta, had earlier announced that his marriage had ended after nearly three decades, but initially withheld details about what led to the separation.

Ekiye explained that he chose to remain silent because he needed time to process the development and gain clarity before discussing the deeply personal matter publicly.

In a statement shared on his Facebook page on Saturday, the gospel musician said his wife was the one who expressed her desire to end the marriage, moved out of their home and subsequently initiated divorce proceedings.

According to him, the separation occurred without any quarrel between them, and he spent about a year making efforts to save the marriage and appealing to his wife to reconsider her decision.

However, he said his attempts were unsuccessful as she remained firm in her decision to proceed with the divorce.

Ekiye said he decided to clarify the circumstances surrounding the marriage breakdown to prevent misconceptions, stressing that he harbours no bitterness or ill will towards his wife or anyone involved.

He added that, despite the painful development after many years together, he has chosen to embrace the next chapter of his life with grace, dignity, maturity and respect for all concerned.
