Halima Kazaure, the former wife of Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has opened up about the end of her marriage and her experience raising their twin sons as a single mother.

According to Ireporter Online, Kazaure disclosed that her marriage to Bashir ended in 2024 when their twin boys were two years old.

The lawyer shared her experience in a personal essay titled “Memoirs of a Single Nigerian Twin Mum with ADHD,” published on her Substack on Wednesday.

In the essay, Kazaure reflected on divorce, motherhood, relationships, heartbreak and the emotional difficulties she experienced while trying to maintain an appearance of strength.

She explained that she had always been sceptical about marriage because of the relationships she witnessed while growing up.

According to her, those experiences contributed to fears that her own marriage could eventually fail, even before the union began.

Kazaure said the eventual collapse of her marriage forced her to confront the reality of raising her children as a single mother.

She wrote, “I became a single mother when my boys were two. My marriage ended in 2024. The truth is that I had never had much faith in marriage.”

She explained that she did not grow up with enough examples of relationships that convinced her that marriage was a safe place to invest her emotions.

Kazaure said she felt that, deep down, she had anticipated the possibility that her marriage would end, describing the experience as entering a marriage while already preparing for its funeral.

However, she revealed that despite her disappointment, she later found herself falling in love again.

The lawyer said she had regained the courage to trust and hope, only to experience heartbreak once more.

“I trusted again. Hoped again. Imagined again. And got my heart broken again,” she wrote.

Kazaure also used an analogy involving her love for wearing white clothes to describe some of her experiences and the irony of trying to maintain a clean appearance despite being naturally clumsy and constantly rushing.

Her reflections offered a candid account of the emotional complexities of divorce, motherhood and attempting to rebuild one’s life after heartbreak.
