Veteran Nigerian musician African China has called on younger artistes to show greater respect for pioneers of the music industry, stressing the importance of recognising the contributions of those who came before them.

The singer, whose socially conscious music has earned him a reputation as an advocate for societal change, made the remarks while reflecting on the enduring relevance of his hit song Mr President, released 26 years ago.

According to African China, the continued relevance of the song despite the passage of time is a testament to the importance of creating music that can withstand changing trends. He said artistes should focus on longevity rather than rushing to achieve fame and financial success.

The musician cited legendary artistes such as Bob Marley, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and Lucky Dube as examples of musicians whose works have remained relevant long after their deaths.

African China also expressed disappointment that many of the social and political problems highlighted in his music decades ago remain unresolved. He lamented the persistence of corruption in Nigeria, alleging that new methods of misappropriating public funds continue to emerge.

Reflecting on the current music industry, he said younger artistes may be reluctant to address social issues because of commercial pressures and the desire to maintain a certain public image.

He also criticised the media and social media culture for contributing to the growing emphasis on fame and entertainment rather than issues affecting society. According to him, the widespread pursuit of followers and online popularity has made it increasingly difficult to encourage meaningful public discourse.

African China further noted that many artistes are concerned that socially conscious music could affect their ability to secure performances and attract commercial opportunities.

Speaking about his upcoming United Kingdom tour, the veteran artiste said it would be his first time leading his own UK tour after supporting several other artistes over the years.

He urged younger musicians to respect veterans, while acknowledging that the younger generation also deserves recognition and opportunities in the industry.

African China stressed that he intends to remain active as an entertainer and promised fans a memorable experience during his upcoming shows.

Beyond his reputation for socially conscious music, the artiste said he is also interested in exploring romantic music. He disclosed that he has recorded a love song with 2Baba and Flavour, describing it as a track suitable for couples.

African China also reflected on the experience that inspired his song London Fever, which addressed allegations he faced in the past. He described the incident as an important learning experience that helped him become more cautious and disciplined in his personal life.

The musician said the experience ultimately taught him the importance of honesty and helped shape the way he conducts himself today.
