Brentford Humble Tottenham 3-0 As Spurs Suffer Nightmare Premier League Start
Tottenham Hotspur endured a disappointing start to the new Premier League season after suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday, August 22.
Despite spending around £237 million during the summer transfer window and breaking their club transfer record twice, Spurs struggled to cope with Brentford’s intensity. Manager Roberto De Zerbi handed competitive debuts to Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke and club-record signing Sandro Tonali, but the new-look side failed to impress.
Brentford took control early and opened the scoring in the 12th minute through Keane Lewis-Potter, who finished after Mamadou Sangare found him unmarked inside the box. The Bees continued to dominate and doubled their advantage eight minutes before half-time when Vitaly Janelt converted from close range after Antonin Kinsky had saved Mathias Jensen’s effort.
Tottenham failed to register a shot on target in the opening 45 minutes, forcing De Zerbi to make changes after the interval. Mateus Fernandes and Rodrigo Bentancur were introduced, but the substitutions did little to change the momentum.
Brentford added a third through Michael Kayode after Kinsky saved another Sangare effort, leaving the visitors facing a humiliating afternoon.
The hosts had an opportunity to extend their lead when referee Michael Oliver awarded a penalty following Bentancur’s foul on Kevin Schade. Igor Thiago, however, struck the post from the spot as Brentford missed the chance to make it four.
Elsewhere, Everton began their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, securing their first opening-day Premier League win in five years.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall put Everton ahead three minutes before half-time before Thierno Barry doubled the advantage eight minutes after the restart with a close-range header from Iliman Ndiaye’s cross.
The result handed David Moyes a winning start and ended Everton’s seven-match winless run stretching back to last season. Palace also suffered a setback when defender Chadi Riad was carried off on a stretcher with an apparent knee injury.
At the City Ground, Leeds United defeated Nottingham Forest 1-0 to spoil Oliver Glasner’s first Premier League match in charge of the hosts.
The game appeared destined to end goalless until Anton Stach scored directly from a free-kick two minutes from full-time after Nikola Milenkovic fouled him.
Forest had earlier gone close through Jair Cunha, who hit the post, while Leeds saw a goal from Harry Wilson ruled out for offside. Stach’s late strike ultimately secured all three points for Leeds.
Ipswich Town also marked their Premier League return with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sunderland at Portman Road.
Emersonn opened the scoring in the 24th minute after Julio Enciso won possession and created the opportunity. Sunderland responded shortly before half-time when Nilson Angulo’s curling free-kick struck the crossbar before crossing the line.
With the match heading towards a draw, substitute Jack Clarke delivered the decisive moment in the 90th minute, curling the ball into the far corner against his former club to give Ipswich a memorable victory.
According to Ireporter Online, the opening weekend has already produced several major talking points, with Brentford’s emphatic victory over Tottenham standing out as one of the biggest surprises of the early Premier League campaign.
