Call, Text, And Data At Risk: NLC Declares War On Telecom Giants Over Tariff Increase

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has vehemently opposed the recent 50% tariff increase by telecommunications providers, demanding an urgent rollback to avoid severe economic fallout. The NLC warned that failure to reverse the hike by February 29, 2025, will trigger a complete nationwide shutdown of telecom services from March 1.

Despite prior agreements involving the Federal Government, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and telecom companies, the tariff hike was implemented, sparking outrage from the NLC. The union labeled the move as a betrayal and accused telecom firms of disregarding due process.

NLC’s Action Plan Against the Tariff Hike:

• Boycott MTN, AIRTEL, and GLO services from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM daily, starting February 13, 2025.
• Suspend all data purchases from these companies.
• Mobilize and educate the public through NLC state councils and affiliate unions.

NLC Leadership Speaks Out

In a communiqué signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero and General Secretary Emma Ugboaja, the union criticized both the telecom companies and the government. They accused the government of failing to shield citizens from corporate exploitation and warned that unchecked economic policies could worsen the plight of Nigerian workers.

The NLC also scrutinized the ongoing Tax Reform Bills, cautioning against policies that could impose further burdens on the working class. While acknowledging the necessity for fiscal reforms, the union vowed to advocate for fair, worker-friendly tax policies to prevent excessive taxation.

The NLC called on civil society organizations and all Nigerians to unite in resisting exploitative economic measures.
