National Grid Denies Collapse, Reason For Blackout In Some Parts Of Nigeria Explained
The recent power outage experienced in various parts of Nigeria on Wednesday has been clarified as a “grid disturbance” rather than a full collapse. This explanation came from National Grid operators following widespread complaints about sudden blackouts……READ MORE
Nigerians took to social media in frustration as power went out unexpectedly, sparking fears of yet another national grid collapse. However, shortly after, the National Grid’s official X (formerly Twitter) account issued a statement addressing the situation.
The initial statement neither confirmed nor denied the possibility of a grid collapse, instead cautioning against the spread of fake news.
“Beware of Fake News Merchants!” the brief message read.
Later, an updated announcement clarified that the issue was a grid disturbance, affecting specific regions in the country rather than a total collapse.
“There was a GRID DISTURBANCE before noon today. Parts of the country experienced outage. Further information shortly,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, expressed deep concern over the increasing electricity tariffs and the excessive taxation burdening Nigerian workers.
Addressing journalists after a recent meeting with government officials, Ajaero criticized current fiscal policies, highlighting how they have made life unbearable for the working class. His remarks came amid ongoing discussions between labour leaders and the federal government concerning the controversial 50% hike in telecom tariffs.
On January 20, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a significant tariff increase for telecom operators. This decision led the NLC to announce a nationwide protest initially scheduled for February 4.
However, following negotiations with the government, labour leaders agreed to postpone the protest for two weeks. As part of the resolution, a 10-member committee—with equal representation from both the government and the NLC—has been established to review the tariff hike and suggest practical solutions.
