Desperate Plea Ends In Death: Husband Dies After Igniting Himself And Wife In Akure

Reports indicate that the couple, who had been married for ten years and had two children, were separated due to an undisclosed marital issue.

The state police command disclosed the incident via their social media on Friday. According to police, the tragedy unfolded after the man had pleaded with his wife to reconcile, but she refused to resolve their differences.

A police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, explained, “The man had been separated from his wife for a while and had been repeatedly asking her to end the conflict and resume their life together. However, the wife declined.”

The source further described that on the day of the incident, the man invited his estranged wife to his home under the pretext of picking up an item. When she arrived, he began to plead with her again. Despite his entreaties, the wife remained firm in her refusal to reconcile, prompting him to lock the door, douse them both in petrol, and set them ablaze. He died at the scene.

Funmilayo Odunlami, the state Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the details of the incident, noting that while the husband was pronounced dead on the spot, the wife was hospitalized with severe burns.

Odunlami stated, “They were married but faced issues that led to their separation. The deceased had asked his wife to visit and collect a wardrobe. Upon her arrival, he began threatening to kill himself, eventually locking the door to ensure they both perished together. He used petrol and a lighter to ignite the flames.
