Preserving Culture: Nigerian Parents Urged to Speak Indigenous Languages to Their Children
Prof. Chinwe Anunobi, the Chief Executive of the National Library of Nigeria, emphasized the importance of speaking indigenous languages at home. She urged Nigerian parents to consistently communicate in their native tongues to foster cultural heritage and improve children’s language skills.
Prof. Anunobi highlighted that using indigenous languages helps children connect with their roots and strengthens family bonds. “Language is a key part of our identity. By speaking our languages, we ensure that our rich cultural heritage is passed down to the next generation,” she stated.
The call comes amid concerns over the decline of indigenous languages in Nigeria, where many children are increasingly exposed to foreign languages through media and education. Prof. Anunobi believes that embracing local languages at home can combat this trend.
Parents are encouraged to create an environment where indigenous languages are spoken regularly, making it a natural part of everyday life. This practice not only enhances children’s communication skills but also instills a sense of pride in their cultural background.
As Nigeria continues to grow in diversity, the preservation of indigenous languages becomes crucial. By speaking these languages, parents play a vital role in ensuring that their children appreciate and understand their heritage.
Prof. Anunobi’s message is clear: embracing indigenous languages is essential for nurturing future generations. Parents are urged to take action today for a culturally rich tomorrow
