TETFund Unveils Bold Nationwide Master Plan To Secure Nigeria’s Campuses

According to Ireporter Online, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced plans to develop a nationwide security master plan aimed at strengthening safety measures across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. The Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Aminu Bello Masari, said the initiative is designed to boost the ability of campuses to prevent, detect, and respond to security threats.

Masari, a former governor of Katsina State, made this known at the opening of a two-day workshop in Abuja focused on campus security and the formulation of a unified security framework for higher institutions. He highlighted the rising threats facing campuses, including bandit attacks, kidnappings, and cyber-related breaches. He explained that Chief Security Officers from institutions across the country were in attendance, with sessions covering intelligence gathering, emergency response, and modern security strategies.

He emphasized that campus security is a collective responsibility involving government authorities, security agencies, school management, students, staff, and surrounding communities. Masari urged participants to approach the discussions with creativity and commitment, noting that the workshop’s outcomes will shape the future safety architecture of Nigeria’s higher education system.

Participants, including vice-chancellors, deans, security heads, ICT experts, and law enforcement representatives, were encouraged to exchange practical insights that could help build resilient and future-ready security systems on campuses. Masari noted that the effort goes beyond routine discussions, describing it as a foundational step towards establishing a comprehensive and dynamic national security framework for tertiary institutions.

He added that the master plan will set standards for threat prevention, risk management, crisis response, and collaboration among institutions and security agencies. It will also promote intelligence-driven operations, protect infrastructure and intellectual assets, and introduce modern physical and digital security technologies to campus environments.

Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny Echono, also stressed the importance of efficient communication channels to respond quickly to security breaches, involving coordination with the military, police, and the Civil Defence Corps. He called for fire drills and similar preparedness measures for security threats, urging institutions to prioritize preventive action rather than wait for incidents to occur. Echono reaffirmed that while infrastructure is important, effective response and prevention strategies are even more critical.
