Tinubu Reacts To Fela’s Grammy Triumph, Calls Him ‘More Than A Musician
According to Ireporter Online, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised the global honour bestowed on late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, following his posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
The president described Fela as far more than a music icon, noting that he was a courageous advocate for the common people, a profound thinker on freedom, and a fearless voice who used his art to confront injustice and oppression.
Tinubu said Fela’s body of work not only transformed global music but also carried powerful messages that continue to resonate decades after his passing. He added that the Afrobeat legend’s courage, creativity and unwavering convictions defined his time and still inspire audiences across the world.
Reflecting on cultural beliefs, the president stated that in line with Yoruba tradition, Fela has ascended to a higher spiritual realm and attained immortality through the enduring impact of his life and legacy.
Tinubu further highlighted that Fela became the first African to be honoured with the Recording Academy of America’s Lifetime Achievement Award, even though the recognition came after his death. He said the award affirms Fela’s lasting global influence and his pivotal role in projecting African music onto the world stage.
The president also noted that Fela was the creator of Afrobeat, stressing that his sound, philosophy and artistic vision remain evident in contemporary Nigerian music, Afrobeats, and various music genres across the globe. He concluded that Fela’s spirit continues to live on through his music and the generations he still inspires.
