IPAC Reacts To EU Observer Mission Report On 2023 Elections

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has criticized the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) report on the 2023 general elections in Nigeria.

The report, presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on June 27, raised concerns about “enduring systemic weaknesses” in the elections, leading to claims of lack of credibility by some stakeholders, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party.

Speaking to reporters in Abuja on Monday, the National Chairman of IPAC, Yabagi Sani, defended INEC’s performance, stating that the electoral body did well considering its human resource and infrastructural limitations, especially with the introduction of technology in its operations.

Sani pointed out that a careful examination of the report revealed that some of the election outcomes demonstrated the benefits of increased utilization and efficient deployment of technology in the electoral process.

The council argued that the 2023 elections resulted in the most diverse legislature since 1999, with nine out of the 18 political parties securing legislative seats, including seven in the Senate, eight in the House of Representatives, and nine in the state houses of assembly.
