The United States saw its highest number of suicides last year, with over 49,000 individuals taking their own lives in 2022, as indicated by newly released government data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The data suggests that suicides in the US are becoming more prevalent than at any time since World War II.

The suicide rate in the US had been increasing from the early 2000s until 2018 when it reached its highest level since 1941, with around 48,300 suicide deaths that year, equating to 14.2 suicides per 100,000 Americans.

The rate declined slightly in 2019 and dropped again in 2020, likely influenced by the initial solidarity and support seen in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, in 2021, suicides rose by 4 percent, and last year, according to the new data, the number increased by more than 1,000 to 49,449, representing about a 3 percent increase compared to the previous year.

The CDC data reveals that approximately 79 percent of the total number of suicides in 2022 were men. The US Health Secretary, Xavier Becerra, remarked that the new suicide death data highlights the belief held by nine out of ten Americans that the country is facing a mental health crisis. He emphasized that many still perceive asking for help as a sign of weakness.

Christina Wilbur, a woman from Florida whose son tragically took his own life last year, expressed her dismay at these figures. She believes something must change, as the numbers should not be increasing.

Experts caution that various factors may be contributing to the recent rise, such as higher rates of depression and limited access to mental health services. However, a significant factor is the increased availability of firearms, especially among older adults.

Despite the concerning statistics, there was a positive development with an over 8 percent decrease in suicides among individuals aged 10 to 24 in 2022. This improvement may be attributed to increased attention to youth mental health issues and efforts to address the problem in schools and other institutions, according to CDC officials.
