Surulere Reps Seat: Tribunal Delivers Ruling On APC’s Okunlola’s Election

Reps 1

The National/State Assembly Election Tribunal convened in Ikeja, Lagos, has upheld the election victory of Mr. Lanre Okunlola from the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the representative for Surulere Federal Constituency II in the House of Representatives.

In a unanimous verdict, the tribunal dismissed the petition brought by Olatunji Shoyinka of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who had contested Okunlola’s win.

The tribunal concurred with the argument put forth by Okunlola’s legal team, asserting that Shoyinka’s petition lacked merit and should be rejected.

Furthermore, the tribunal ordered Shoyinka and the PDP to pay a punitive fine of N200,000 to Okunlola and the APC.

The petitioners, represented by their legal counsel, had challenged Okunlola’s victory based on two claims.

They argued that the election was marred by corrupt and illegal practices facilitated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in collaboration with Okunlola and the APC, involving falsification, manipulation, and forgery of election results.

In its ruling delivered recently, the tribunal supported Okunlola’s position and affirmed his status as the duly elected representative for Surulere Federal Constituency II.

During the election, Okunlola secured victory with 27,725 votes, while Shoyinka came in second with 4,875 votes.
