Guatemalan President-elect Bernardo Arévalo has accused powerful groups within the country’s justice system of being involved in an “ongoing coup” against his victory in the August 20 presidential runoffs.

Arévalo, during a press conference, stated that these groups, led by the Attorney General, are attempting to subvert the constitutional order and undermine democracy.

The Public Ministry is investigating allegations that Arévalo’s party, Movimiento Semilla, used forged signatures when seeking authorization as a political party. Semilla has denied the allegations and accused authorities of trying to prevent Arévalo from assuming power.

In response to Arévalo’s remarks, the Public Ministry stated that it respects the opinions of all citizens and emphasized its role in investigating the matter.

Arévalo’s party has filed appeals to assert his right to govern Guatemala for the next four years and demand respect for the election results.

The legal status of the Movimiento Semilla party was provisionally canceled by the Citizens’ Registry shortly before the party’s victory in the runoff was officially declared. Additionally, the Congress Board of Directors declared current and elected deputies under the Semilla banner as independent, preventing their participation in key legislative roles and representation abroad.
