Makinde Demands Urgent Creation Of State Police To Tackle Insecurity
In a resolute call to address the escalating security challenges across the nation, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is urging the immediate establishment of state police….CONTINUE READING
The governor made this plea during a meeting with the Conference of Speakers of State Legislators, South-West Chapter, led by Speaker Adeoye Aribasoye of the Ekiti State House of Assembly.
Makinde highlighted that the previous denial by the Federal Government to approve the demand for state police led to the creation of the Western Nigeria Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun.
Emphasizing the need for unity among political parties, Makinde stated, “This is a demonstration that the electioneering period is over, and you need to have everybody pulling together to govern and deliver dividends of democracy to our people.”
Expressing confidence in the capability of states to maintain their police, Makinde refuted concerns and said, “I disagreed at that particular time and still disagree to date that the states are not in the position to maintain state police.” He argued that if the responsibility is shared, states should have access to resources from the federation account to support their police systems.
Calling on lawmakers to play a pivotal role in making state police a reality, Makinde affirmed, “So, the issue of being unable to maintain state police will not arise again.
Give us the responsibility first and see if certain states will be able to maintain it or not. But since we could not get state police, we settled for Amotekun.”
As insecurity continues to be a pressing concern, Makinde’s call for state police reflects a growing consensus on the need for localized security solutions.
