UNN Begins Restoration Following Windstorm Destruction Of Hostels And Facilities

A powerful windstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall caused extensive damage at the Nsukka campus of the University of Nigeria on Friday, leaving parts of student hostels destroyed, uprooting trees and disrupting movement across the institution.

According to Ireporter Online, the storm swept through multiple sections of the campus, with Awolowo and Isa Kaita hostels suffering the most severe impact as large portions of their roofs were torn off by the strong winds, exposing student accommodation areas and interrupting normal residential activities.

University authorities disclosed that several trees were uprooted during the incident, while heavy branches fell across internal roads, temporarily blocking access and raising safety concerns for students, staff and visitors. Despite the widespread destruction, the institution confirmed that no casualties were recorded.

In response to the disaster, the university immediately activated emergency response teams to clear debris, restore access routes and secure affected locations. Relevant departments, including the Works Services Department, Taskforce on Environment, Security Unit, Directorate of Housing and Accommodations, and the Student Affairs Department, were mobilised to ensure the safety of the university community and facilitate recovery operations.

The institution also commenced a comprehensive assessment of damaged facilities to determine the extent of the losses and identify urgent repair needs. Authorities stated that the evaluation would guide restoration efforts while measures are being implemented to minimise the impact on students whose hostels were affected by the storm.

As part of the response plan, the university is making alternative accommodation arrangements to reduce inconvenience for displaced students while repair works are being planned.

Vice-Chancellor Simon Uchenna Ortuanya expressed sympathy to students and staff affected by the incident, reassuring them that the institution remains committed to their welfare, safety and security. He directed all relevant units to accelerate remedial actions and restore normalcy across the campus as quickly as possible.

The Vice-Chancellor also praised students and staff for remaining calm throughout the emergency and encouraged continued vigilance and cooperation with officials overseeing the recovery process. The university added that further updates would be released as damage assessments are completed and restoration efforts progress.
