ADC Declines To Confirm Amaechi As Atiku’s Alleged Running Mate Report

According to Ireporter Online, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declined to confirm reports suggesting that its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has settled on former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as his running mate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Several media reports had earlier claimed that Atiku had chosen Amaechi, the former Rivers State governor, as his vice-presidential candidate following the party’s recently concluded presidential primary.

It will be recalled that Amaechi came second in the ADC presidential primary, which was won by Atiku Abubakar.

However, when contacted on Saturday, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said he could not verify the reports.

“I don’t have that confirmation. I cannot confirm for you at this time,” Abdullahi said in a telephone interview with Premium Times.

When pressed further on whether consultations for a running mate were ongoing, the party spokesman declined to give further clarification, insisting he had no information on the matter at present.

“All I can tell you is that I don’t have information. You asked me to confirm something, and I have said I don’t have information in that regard,” he added.

Despite the uncertainty, Abdullahi affirmed that the party would eventually unveil a vice-presidential candidate, noting that the selection process had not been concluded.

“Definitely we will have a running mate. But to confirm specifically the question you asked me, I’m not able to confirm now. If I have any further information, I will let you know,” he said.

Meanwhile, speculation about a possible Atiku–Amaechi ticket has continued to intensify since the conclusion of the ADC primary election, which saw Atiku emerge victorious over Amaechi and other contenders.

Reports had also suggested a potential North-East/South-South political alliance ahead of the 2027 elections, pairing Atiku from Adamawa State with Amaechi from Rivers State.

In a related development, ADC chieftain Chukwuemeka Eze dismissed claims that Amaechi had rejected any alleged vice-presidential offer.

Eze responded to remarks attributed to party leader Dele Momodu, which suggested that Amaechi was unwilling to accept the position.

He clarified that there was no indication that the former minister had turned down any offer, adding that Amaechi only stated after the primaries that he had not been formally approached.

Eze also cautioned party members against spreading unverified claims that could create internal tension within the party.
