The discovery, made by the State Ministry of Health Facility, Accreditation, and Monitoring Unit (ASHEFAAMU), has sent shockwaves through the community.
Located at No. 1 School Road, Tansian University, Umunya, in Oyi Local Government Area, the facility appeared legitimate on the surface but concealed a sinister truth beneath its facade.
Dr. Afam Obidike, the state Commissioner for Health, expressed profound disbelief at the findings, describing the discovery as “shocking and unbelievable.” The operation came to light during a routine inspection by the state’s Health Facility, Accreditation, and Monitoring Unit, prompting immediate action.
Upon arrival, inspectors encountered locked doors and fleeing nurses, signaling something amiss. With the assistance of security operatives including the OCHA-Brigade, Civil Defence Corps, and Police, access to the facility was gained, revealing a disturbing scene.
Inside, six pregnant teenagers, aged between 14 and 21, were discovered, allegedly held against their will. They revealed chilling details of their captivity under the supervision of a self-proclaimed doctor identified as Mr. Odili Ossai from Delta State, who remains at large. The girls recounted being exploited, with their babies destined for sale while they returned home empty-handed.
Authorities wasted no time in apprehending five individuals linked to the illicit operation, with further investigations underway by law enforcement agencies.
Dr. Obidike reiterated the administration’s commitment under Governor Charles Soludo to eradicate fake and unregistered medical facilities across the state. Measures such as the establishment of the State Illegal and Anti-Quackery Taskforce Team and a comprehensive database of approved health facilities underscore the government’s dedication to ensuring public health and safety.
The Commissioner issued a stern warning to other illegal establishments, urging them to cease operations immediately or face the full force of the law. With a dedicated hotline in place for reporting illegal activities, the government seeks to empower citizens in the fight against unethical practices in healthcare.
As the investigation unfolds, Anambra residents remain vigilant, united in the pursuit of justice and accountability to safeguard the well-being of all.
