The display comes as Premier League clubs participate in the Rainbow Laces campaign, an initiative by Stonewall to promote LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports. The Football Association (FA), which prohibits religious messages on sports kits under Rule A4, had previously reminded Guehi and Crystal Palace of these guidelines.

Ipswich Town captain Sam Morsy also opted not to wear a rainbow armband during the match, citing his religious beliefs. These actions underscore the diverse ways players approach issues of inclusion and personal expression within the game.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner highlighted the importance of unity and mutual respect in football. “Integration and no discrimination are core values, and Marc shares those beliefs,” Glasner stated, emphasizing that Guehi’s maturity allows him to navigate these discussions thoughtfully while respecting the campaign’s focus on tolerance.
