In a statement issued by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, President Bola Tinubu emphasized the importance of respectful dialogue during the debate.

Idris stressed that the tax reforms were designed to benefit all Nigerians, regardless of region or ethnicity, and cautioned against rhetoric that could inflame tensions. He clarified that these reforms aim to ensure financial autonomy for states and local governments and address long-standing issues in resource allocation.

“Engagement should remain informed, respectful, and understanding, with no room for name-calling or divisive language,” Idris stated. He also noted that misinformation surrounding the bills was widespread, but assured that the reforms would not impoverish any region or weaken federal agencies.

Tinubu’s administration is committed to empowering local governments, he said, and the reforms will enable greater accountability in public resource management. The minister also revealed that the president had directed the Federal Ministry of Justice to collaborate with the National Assembly to address concerns before the bills are passed.

“This is the most impactful and far-reaching set of fiscal reforms Nigeria has seen in decades,” Idris concluded, highlighting the historic significance of the tax bills.
