This issue is also recognized as a contributing factor to environmental degradation, further exacerbating the country’s economic struggles.

Organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), and the International Climate Change Development Initiative (ICCDI) emphasize the urgent need for sustainable practices to mitigate e-waste, safeguarding the health of the populace, the environment, and the economy.

Mr. Olumide Idowu, co-founder of ICCDI Africa, remarked to Vanguard: “The increasing amount of e-waste in Nigeria is concerning. While proper management of e-waste could benefit the economy, the mishandling currently seen in Nigeria negatively impacts the people, the environment, and economic stability.”

Growing E-Waste Dump Sites

According to WHO statistics, approximately 60,000 tons of second-hand electronics enter Nigeria each year, primarily from Europe, the United States, and Asia, turning the country into a global e-waste dumping ground.

Many of these electronic items arrive in the country labeled as “reusable” or “refurbishable.” However, they often turn out to be hazardous waste, discarded in overcrowded markets and informal recycling centers.

Notable locations such as Ikeja Computer Village and Alaba International in Lagos, Ariaria in Aba, and Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State are reported to host significant quantities of these e-waste deposits.

A 2020 UNICEF study found that nearly 70% of children living near e-waste dumping sites or recycling areas display elevated blood lead levels, which can lead to cognitive impairments, stunted growth, and neurological damage.
