Turji had threatened violent retaliation against the people of Zamfara and Sokoto states unless his brother, Baka Wurgi, held by the military, was released before the end of 2024. Wurgi had been transferred to military custody from Shinkafi General Hospital, intensifying the terror leader’s fury.

As Turji’s deadline passed, his gang struck, ambushing the passengers at Kwanar Jalab village in Shinkafi Local Government Area early in the morning. According to local resident Garba Sani, this marks the first time the bandits set fire to a vehicle after an abduction, signaling an alarming escalation in their methods.

“This is unprecedented—bandits usually abduct and demand ransoms, but this time, they destroyed the vehicle as well,” Sani remarked. “We strongly believe this attack was motivated by Turji’s threats related to his brother’s detention.”

Prominent APC leader Dr. Sani Shinkafi has called on security forces to take immediate action against Turji, criticizing the military’s failure to arrest him despite numerous threats. “The time for inaction is over. Turji’s terror must be stopped before he brings more havoc,” Shinkafi urged.

Meanwhile, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, had previously dismissed Turji’s threats during a recent briefing, saying, “Bello Turji is a dead man walking. Terror leaders like him will face the same fate as those before them—defeat and burial on the battlefield.”

As authorities scramble to contain the situation, it remains to be seen whether Turji’s group will escalate their violent campaign further.
