three months.
Chairman of the NPC, Alhaji Nasir Kwarra, revealed the news during a press conference following the presentation of the ‘Baby of the Year’ birth certificate by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, at the Asokoro General Hospital in Abuja on Wednesday. Kwarra was represented by the Federal Commissioner for Katsina State, Bala Banya.
This significant milestone, according to Kwarra, marks a major step towards establishing a robust national identity management system. He emphasized that birth registration is not only essential for legal recognition but also solidifies a child’s identity as a Nigerian citizen.
“The birth certificate serves as a legal identity and confirms the individual as a Nigerian citizen,” Kwarra said.
In a major advancement, the NPC has also integrated e-birth certificates with the National Identity Number (NIN) system. This means that every child registered automatically receives a NIN, ensuring seamless inclusion in the national database.
“We have registered over 10 million children in just three months, and this process is ongoing,” Kwarra added. “Our next focus will be registering children under the age of one, and we are making significant progress.”
NPC Director-General, Dr. Osifo Ojogun, highlighted plans to establish over 4,000 registration centers across the country, ensuring accessibility for all Nigerians. He also pointed out that advanced technology is being leveraged to ensure the authenticity of every child’s registration, preventing any duplication.
Dr. Ojogun also took the opportunity to thank the First Lady, represented by Hajiya Nana Shettima, for presenting the birth certificate to the ‘Baby of the Year.’ Additionally, he urged Nigerians to register deaths with the NPC to maintain an accurate national register.
