Since his inauguration on January 20, 2025, Trump has issued a wave of executive orders, including plans to impose tariffs on major trading partners like Canada, Mexico, and China, effective February 1. He also withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Climate Accords and the World Health Organization (WHO), alongside other contentious decisions, such as officially recognizing only two genders—male and female.

These sweeping measures have sparked mixed reactions from Nigerian political leaders, who fear the consequences for global relations and Nigeria’s economy.

Ladipo Johnson, National Publicity Secretary of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), predicted that Trump’s pro-drilling energy policies could lead to a drop in global oil prices, negatively affecting Nigeria’s economy.

“Trump believes in increasing oil production, which may crash prices. This will undoubtedly impact the world, including Nigeria,” Johnson said. He also criticized Trump’s isolationist worldview, describing it as a wake-up call for Nigerian leaders to prioritize self-reliance and proper management of the nation’s resources.

Johnson added, “We have the natural resources but lack leadership and managerial resources. We must elect leaders who will hasten Nigeria’s growth and reduce dependency on foreign powers.”

Bala Ibrahim, National Publicity Director of the All Progressives Congress (APC), echoed the call for Nigerians to learn from Trump’s policies. He urged Nigerian immigrants to ensure they comply with U.S. immigration laws to avoid becoming victims of strict enforcement measures.

“Nigerians traveling to the U.S. must ensure they meet all requirements. As long as they remain law-abiding, America will not target them unfairly,” Ibrahim stated.

Kehinde Edun, National Legal Adviser of the Labour Party, noted that Trump’s “America First” stance should inspire Nigerian leaders to prioritize the welfare of their citizens.

“The man is putting America first, as he should. Nigerians need to make their country work instead of roaming other nations,” Edun remarked. He also criticized some Nigerian elites for seeking refuge abroad after contributing to the country’s challenges.

As Trump’s policies continue to unfold, Nigerian political stakeholders emphasize the need for self-reliance and the importance of fostering national development to withstand external challenges.
