Obi Drops Political Bombshell: Calls For Single 5-Year Presidential Term In Nigeria
Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has stirred debate by proposing a single, non-renewable five-year term for Nigeria’s presidency.
According to IReporter Online, Obi made this recommendation during a visit to Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, at the Government House on Friday.
Drawing inspiration from South Korea’s political structure, Obi argued that a one-term, five-year limit would compel presidents to focus on governance rather than political survival.
According to IReporter Online, he stressed that the absence of re-election prospects would eliminate the tendency for leaders to spend the bulk of their tenure planning campaigns instead of delivering results.
“If I have the opportunity, we should stop having a second tenure for presidents. It should be five years. That is what is in South Korea, so people come in and know that they have a job to do.
What people do now is to be president for one year and use the rest thinking about the next tenure. Let’s stop it, let’s face the real job,” Obi stated.
According to IReporter Online, Obi’s remarks have added fresh momentum to the ongoing national conversation about constitutional and electoral reforms in Nigeria.
