Kano Women Affairs Commissioner Dumps Kwankwasiyya, Joins APC

According to Ireporter Online, Kano State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and Persons with Special Needs, Hajiya Amina Sani, widely known as Amina HOD, has defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), in what is being described as a significant development in the state’s evolving political landscape.

Amina Sani, a prominent grassroots mobiliser and influential figure within the Kwankwasiyya Movement, formally aligned with the APC alongside Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and other senior government officials who have recently moved to the ruling party. The development signals a growing wave of political realignment within Kano State.

The defection was confirmed on Sunday through a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Garba Waiya, who characterised the move as a defining and historic moment in the state’s political journey. He noted that the commissioner’s decision reflects her commitment to the “Kano First” ideology, aimed at accelerating development and fostering peaceful coexistence across the state.

Waiya explained that the defection is part of a broader political movement spreading across Kano, one that prioritises the collective interest of the people above individual or factional considerations. He added that the emerging movement represents a conscious decision by residents to take ownership of their political future and pursue meaningful progress.

He further stated that the initiative is geared toward repositioning Kano politically, economically and socially, while restoring the state’s standing among its peers nationwide. According to him, key state institutions remain firmly supportive of Governor Yusuf and are fully committed to the administration’s development-driven agenda.

Reacting to criticism from opposition elements, the Information Commissioner dismissed recent reactions as deliberate political theatrics intended to create distractions. He stressed that governance remains stable, noting that power and control are not diminished when institutions remain focused on transformation and responsive leadership.

Waiya reaffirmed that the current administration would remain steadfast in delivering good governance to the people of Kano and would not be swayed by political distractions or pressured into compromising its mandate.

It will be recalled that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, alongside 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight federal lawmakers and 44 local government chairmen, defected to the APC on January 26, 2026, marking a dramatic shift in the state’s political alignment.
