We Want Nigerians Safe — Senate Moves Fast On State Police As Insecurity Rises
According to Ireporter Online, the Nigerian Senate has pledged to fast-track constitutional amendments aimed at establishing state police as part of renewed efforts to address the country’s worsening insecurity, including rising cases of banditry, kidnappings, and violent attacks across several regions.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Yemi Adaramodu, disclosed this while speaking on ongoing legislative plans to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture. He noted that lawmakers are prepared to begin the constitutional process required for the creation of state police, stressing that the matter will be given urgent attention.
Adaramodu explained that the Senate is determined to ensure the necessary legal framework for state policing is concluded swiftly in order to enhance security operations and curb criminal activities nationwide. He added that decentralising policing powers has become increasingly necessary amid growing security concerns and calls for state governments to play a more active role in safeguarding their territories.
He further stated that the National Assembly is ready to accelerate legislative actions in support of broader national security reforms and to complement the efforts of the Federal Government in tackling insecurity.
Quoting him, he said the Senate is fully prepared to commence the constitutional procedures for the establishment of state police without delay, adding that the legislature will ensure the required legal backing is provided to strengthen security and protect Nigerians from criminal elements.
