The event drew a distinguished crowd, including notable figures such as Senate President Godswill Akpabio, 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) Peter Obi, former Minister of Labour and Productivity Chris Ngige, and former Head of State Yakubu Gowon.

Religious leaders, politicians, traditional rulers, and business moguls also graced the occasion, paying tribute to the iconic religious figure’s eight decades of impactful existence.

As Onaiyekan officially joined the esteemed club of octogenarians, former Head of State Yakubu Gowon hailed him as an exceptional religious leader and a man of unwavering faith. Gowon lauded Onaiyekan’s tireless efforts toward fostering interfaith unity in the country, extending warm wishes for many more healthy years.

Senator Akpabio, serving as the Chairman of the celebration, commended Onaiyekan’s remarkable life and service. He hailed the Cardinal as a true icon of faith and leadership, emphasizing his commitment to justice, compassion, and unity that has left an indelible mark on countless lives and inspired generations.

Cardinal Onaiyekan, who served as the Archbishop of Abuja from 1994 to 2019, held prominent positions such as President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, and Bishop of Ilorin.

The birthday celebration also featured the presentation of a book titled “Religion for Peace,” adding a literary touch to the festivities.
