Litigation Pushed Me Out Of Labour Party, Peter Obi Reveals After NDC Convention

In a statement shared on his X account following the convention, Obi also commended the African Democratic Congress under the leadership of David Mark for offering what he described as a democratic platform that embraced opposition figures during a critical period.

Obi revealed that ongoing litigation compelled both him and former Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to exit the Labour Party and the New Nigeria Peoples Party, respectively.

He praised the spirit of cooperation shown by the opposition and said such unity remains essential to building a better Nigeria.

The former governor voiced deep concern over what he described as the erosion of democratic values in the country. He lamented that individuals who once benefited from democracy are now supporting actions that undermine electoral justice and suppress dissenting voices.

According to Obi, Nigeria is facing a dangerous moment in its democratic journey, with opposition parties increasingly subjected to intimidation, manipulation, and political coercion.

He warned that the nation is suffering from severe governance failures, citing declining accountability, weakened institutions, widespread corruption, and the growing inability of government structures to meet citizens’ needs.

Obi further painted a grim picture of the country’s socioeconomic condition, noting that more than 140 million Nigerians live in multidimensional poverty, while inflation, unemployment, insecurity, and business closures continue to worsen.

He questioned who speaks for parents who can no longer provide for their families and for victims of kidnapping and violence, stressing that the country’s current hardship is the result of years of poor leadership and self-serving politics.

Despite the challenges, Obi urged Nigerians not to give up hope. He said the nation still has the human and natural resources required to thrive if leaders commit to justice, competence, equity, and productive governance.

He called on citizens and opposition leaders to work together to rescue the country from further decline and rebuild it into a nation that reflects the aspirations and potential of its people.
