Police Arrest Four Suspects In Murder Of Nigerian Man In South Africa

The suspects are accused of assaulting Julius at the Protea Estate residential complex in Midrand on Saturday, December 7, 2024.

Julius died from his injuries at Tembisa Hospital on the morning of Wednesday, December 11, according to police spokesperson Lt-Col Mavela Masondo.

“Midrand police arrested the first two suspects on Wednesday morning,” Masondo reported.

He added that two additional suspects were later captured. The suspects, all males, are aged 20, 24, 27, and 28.

“The four suspects are currently in police custody,” he confirmed.

They made their initial court appearance at the Alexandra magistrate’s court on a murder charge on Friday, December 13.

The Nigerian Union in South Africa (NUSA) attended the court proceedings to advocate for justice. NUSA submitted a comprehensive report to Nigerian ambassador Alexander Temitope and appointed a consular officer to join their legal team, led by NUSA president-general Advocate Smart Nwobi.

“We want to ensure that our presence is felt and the significance of this case is highlighted. We will keep our community informed as developments unfold,” stated NUSA’s national publicity secretary, Akindele Olunloyo.

Describing the events leading to the tragedy, Julius’s girlfriend, Lumka, recounted that while returning home on Saturday evening, they encountered a vehicle blocking their path in the residential complex.

Julius honked his horn for the vehicle to move but received no response. He then exited his car and politely asked the driver to relocate.

The driver refused, insisting they would only move when they were ready.

After reporting the situation to the estate’s security, Julius was ambushed from behind by the driver and several accomplices, leaving him incapacitated on the ground. No residents offered help.

Lumka recounted pleading with the security guard to call emergency services or the police, but her requests were ignored. It was only after contacting her father for assistance that Julius was transported to Tembisa Hospital, where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.
