Tinubu Inaugurates WAGL’s 40,000 Cubic Meter LPG Vessel In South Korea

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stated that Nigeria is committed to delivering clean and sustainable energy solutions not only within the country but also across Africa and beyond.

He made these remarks during the commissioning of a 40,000 cubic meters (CBM) Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) vessel, named “MT Iyaloja (Lagos),” in Ulsan, South Korea, as reported by the NNPCL.

According to iReporter Online, the vessel, owned by WAGL Energy Limited—a joint venture between NNPC Ltd. and Sahara Group—is a dual-fuel, fully refrigerated LPG carrier.

This new addition increases WAGL’s total LPG vessel capacity to 162,000 CBM, complementing its existing fleet which includes MT Africa Gas, MT Sahara Gas, MT BaruMK, and MT Sapet.

 Represented by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, President Tinubu praised WAGL Energy Limited, NNPC Limited, and Sahara Group for their foresight and dedication in expanding Africa’s role in the global clean energy value chain.

 NNPC Ltd.’s Group CEO, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, described the vessel as a significant boost to Nigeria’s gas development efforts. He emphasized that the vessel would play a crucial role in advancing Nigeria’s economic development through increased gas utilization.

He also highlighted NNPC Ltd.’s commitment to making LPG affordable, accessible, and available nationwide, noting their substantial contribution to LPG distribution in West Africa over the past five years.

According to iReporter Online, Sahara Group’s Chairman and Executive Director, Mr. Temitope Shonubi, underscored that the expansion aligns with Sahara Group’s vision of addressing Africa’s energy infrastructure gaps.

He paid tribute to the legacy of Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, in whose honor the vessel was named, emphasizing Sahara Group’s commitment to energy access and partnership with NNPC Ltd.

WAGL’s Managing Director, Mr. Mohammed Sani Bello, announced plans to further expand the fleet within two years, including adding a Small Gas Carrier and a Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC).

According to iReporter Online, the commissioning ceremony featured the symbolic ribbon-cutting of MT Iyaloja (Lagos), named in honor of Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, the late mother of President Tinubu.

The ribbon was cut by her granddaughter, the Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, Alhaja Folasade Mujidat Tinubu-Ojo.
