The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, shook the community, leaving residents reeling from the heartbreaking loss. As of the time of filing this report, detailed information surrounding the fire remains scant.
Both the Borno State Police Command and the state government are yet to release official statements regarding the tragedy, leaving many questions unanswered.
This heartbreaking event comes on the heels of recent unrest in the region, with reports emerging a few days ago of nine IDPs from the Gamboru-Ngala camp purportedly returning after being allegedly abducted by Boko Haram insurgents on March 4.
Dr. Barkindo Mohammed Saidu, Director-General of Borno’s State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), confirmed to Punch Newspaper that the nine individuals had indeed made their way back to the camp. Meanwhile, authorities in Ngala remain vigilant for any further returns.
The backdrop of this tragedy is the abduction of 102 IDPs on March 4 while they were collecting firewood in the bush. While local sources and media outlets corroborated the abduction, the United Nations also condemned the alleged kidnapping of over 200 IDPs.
However, the Borno State government has disputed these claims, suggesting instead that the individuals may have simply lost their way.
The fire incident at the Muna IDP camp serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by displaced persons in conflict-ridden regions, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced security and support for vulnerable communities.
