Reports indicate that the commercial building, intended for commercial purposes upon completion, crumbled during the early hours of Sunday, March 10, with construction workers reportedly on the top floor at the time.

Efforts to respond swiftly to the disaster included the deployment of an excavator to the site to clear debris and potentially rescue those trapped underneath.

Confirming the incident, Chike Mmaduekwe, Chairman of the Anambra State Physical Planning Board, revealed that the construction was approved for a three-storey building, suggesting a violation of the original plan by the developer, resulting in the additional floors.

This tragedy follows closely on the heels of another building collapse less than two weeks ago at the Oduigbo section of the Ochanja market in Onitsha, further highlighting the pressing need for enhanced safety measures in construction practices.
